Rising Above “The Gaze” – Challenges Faced by the Female Provider & How to Overcome Them

Dentistry Today recently published the article “Rising Above ‘The Gaze’ – Challenges Faced by the Female Provider & How to Overcome Them” by PDA Faculty Member Dr. Maggie Augustyn.
In the article, Dr. Augustyn recounts the story of a 60-year-old male patient (“Tim”) who had faithfully visited his previous dentist for 15 years before both retired. Despite being informed of a clean bill of health just six months prior, Tim’s new exam revealed some serious dental issues. When Dr. Augustyn presented these findings to Tim, she not only had to overcome the shock and disappointment he experienced, but she also faced an additional layer of gender bias.
Dr. Augustyn writes, “For female providers, there is an added layer of apprehension: the fear of being unheard, dismissed, and having our expertise and professional opinion disregarded the moment we walk into the room.” Then she shares her strategies for handling challenging patient interactions, particularly those influenced by gender dynamics.
